Hi Everyone!

I've been reading these forums for a few months now, and am a member of the OC. I've been playing keyboards since just after Christmas, and so am somewhat of a novice as you can imagine! I'm playing a Roland A-37 (76 semi-weighted key MIDI controller) connected to a JV-1010.

Music-wise, i'm a huge DT fan (obviously!) and love basically everything that Jordan does, but have pretty wide musical tastes ranging from classical (i love a lot of Chopin and Beethoven's work) to more extreme stuff like black metal (gotta love Cradle of Filth!)and a great deal in between. Pain of Salvation are also damn high on my list of favourite bands, as are more old school progressive acts like the Floyd and Yes. Absolutely love Sigur Ros too, and the Smashing Pumpkins. To finish this introduction off, i'm a medical student (recently finished my second year of five) at Southampton medical school in the UK.

As far as playing keys goes, i've been trying to play some DT stuff, with varying degrees of success as is to be expected! I've been trying to compose my own stuff as much as possible, as this is where the true joy of music is to be found, i think. Still, i also really like learning to play other stuff (like the first track on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness).

However, i've recently been having problems gaining independance of both hands. For example, i've been trying to play Wait For Sleep of late, i can play the left and right hand parts just about fine, but when it comes to putting them together, things kind of go off the rails! If anyone has any advice about how to overcome this problem, or has any advice in general for a beginner, i'd love to hear it.

Thanks very much in advance guys, and sorry for writing such an essay as my first post!

Take it easy,

Pat

PS Any other medical students on the board?

Hey man, welcome to the coolest forum on the net!
first of all I wanna say: PAIN OF SALVATION KICKS SOME SERIOUS ASS!!!

Then, for me the key to learn something with both hands at the same time is to first do it with both hands separately and then start playing the piece note by note with both hands very slowly, in that way you will be aware of how boths hands interact with eachother.

Cheers

Welcome ! Fellow Roland User !!
I'd have to agree, learn each part one hand at a time.
I would add this advice: Find your weaker hand, and learn that part first.
Work harder on your weaker hand and after a while, you'll find that your versatility increases not just on the piece you are working on, but on other songs as well.

:D

Thanks a lot guys, this is all good.

I've also recently be trying to learn the piano solo in Spock's Beard's Love Beyond Words, i'll try what you say for that too.

Thanks again, any tips from anyone else?

Cheers,

Pat

Hey Pat, I know your pain. I've been trying Wait For Sleep as well as Learning to Live and I've run into the same problems as you. After talking with a friend of mine, who plays excellent keys...I learned pretty much what everyone else has posted regarding this. Spend loads of time with the left hand part first and foremost.[/quote]

Ah well, gotta start somewhere!

Thanks a lot for everyone's replies.
