View Full Version : Do you subscribe to Keyboard magazine?
I've been told that I should subscribe to Keyboard magazine and was wondering how many of the board members here subscribe.

I became really disappointed with Keyboard magazine... I'd really recommend the British magazine Sound On Sound, it covers all kinds of other stuff besides keyboards (microphones, software, other recording equipment) but it's heavily slanted to keyboard players. Once you read a few issues of SOS you'll soon forget about Keyboard magazine :)
You can check the mag out online at www.soundonsound.com

I don't subscribe... I flick through it in Borders every month, have a read through any articles that are of interest. I've bought the odd issue (well, 2, the one with Wakeman on the cover and the one with JR on the cover :)), plus we used to have it in the college library so I read it there.
I'd 2nd Rick's comments about Sound On Sound though, I've been a subscriber for a couple of years, some fantastic articles and in depth features and interviews in there, you learn something every month. Also is considerably less than 60% adverts (unlike any of the US magazines) :)

I did subscribe years and years ago. However, there's so much new gear coming out every year, I can't keep up with it anymore. As much as I'd like to stay on top of the technology, I just can't afford new gear every time it comes out. One of the boards in my rig has General Midi 2, and I don't even use that. :D Now I'm seeing USB and all sorts of great new innovations, but it looks like for now I'll just have to stick with Antique Collecting.

Keyboard is the best mag out there for the practicing keboardist,
integrating the latest news about technology in our sport as
well as coverage of the latest and greatest players on the scene,
key news coverage and playing tips for best practices.
There are other mags out there like SOS that are also very
entertaining to read (EQ, Electronic Musician, Recording,
Future Music).

I think I'll give it a test run for about a year.

I read most issues of Keyboard and EM. They both have their good points.

I suscribe to Japanese Keyboard Magazine, not the one you mentioned.
The US keyboard magazine are just a big pile of advertisement and gear review.

Yeah, too many adverts. I read it for a year or so and got sick of the constant gear review section getting bigger, along with the adverts vs. articles about music getting unbalanced.

I used to subscribe for 2 years but it got really old when I could look back at all the issues and find about 3 good interviews with musicians that I liked. The one reviewer at the time was an ass, calling Jordan's disc pompus etc.. A couple years later he's on the cover, if you ask me I think its ass. They're more into interviewing non-musicians (DJs) than Jazz guys and as far as they're concerned keyboards in metal doesnt even exist.
Way too many ads, I counted something like 3 pages to 1 ads vs content at that cost there is no way that magazine should cost more than $2.50 US all those ads bring in quite a bit of money.
The magazine has lots of potential but its not being tapped. Keyboards are in every genre of music yet the magazine lacks focus, they should have a page or two section of each genre with a news page, featured artist and lesson. That way everyone would gain something from the magazine.
I think Future Music is much better even though its also aimed at techno players.
