View Full Version : I Need active speaker advice!

I desperately need 2 active speakers to handle the mids and highs.

I've needed better speakers for decades.
I tried Yorkvilles (2 pairs) and returned them because I could hear clipping bass or mids.

I was suggested to buy the B-52 Matrix 1000 (http://www.b-52pro.com/models/Matrix1000.html)
Which is essentially a 15" 400w sub and 2x 150w 10" satelites (w/ horn tweeters)
The Canadian price tag was $2000 (including cables, stands) :x

Impressed with this concept of subwoofer and satelites I then checked out the VELODYNE CHT-12 400W POWERED SUBWOOFER and bought one cheap on eBay. ($242 usd somehow became $393 cad) It rocks!!
Actually I can hear stuff in my room rattle but no woofer clipping!

I tried the Behringer truths but I'm concerned that I really want these active speakers for powerful home reproduction (ie, synth, vocals, drums, guitar, dvd, cd---everything in the mix) and not just for mixing but for cranking up.

Reference monitors aren't designed to push air but are designed to reveal a bad mix. --- not what I want. (Had enough of clipping speakers)

Previously when I've asked here I often only get advice of the most expensive kind. ie, JBL Eon's Mackie HR824... Just don't have that kinda money but please any thoughts of available powered monitors would be appreciated. :)

I've been concentrating my efforts on the Mackie series. I currently have one Mackie SRM450 (which they claim has "monitor" quality response) and still working on the second. If you google SRM450, I'm sure you can find plenty of info.

Then you can grow it with related equipment. There is a larger "all-in-one" active type Mackie or you could get the sub-woofer cabs which also doulbe as a stand for the SRM450s. The SRM450s are setup to work in conjunction with the sub-woofer cabs with a thru out and a 75Hz switch on the back of the speaker.

Good luck, John.

Thanks John,
I have been watching ebay for Mackie SM450 but I only ever see deluxe dust covers for SM450 by some ebay spammer.

If I pay for those in a local music store my sub + satelites will reach the $2000 mark. I'm trying to steer clear of that high price tag.

I see them for sale all the time on ebay. In fact there are some there now. Make sure you type in "srm" (not "sm"). Search ebay with this "mackie srm*".

I bought mine from a music store and will probably purchase the next one from a music store. The store said they would sell me a new one for $650 USD. I'm not going to pay $500-$600 on ebay for a used one.

Sometimes ebay is crazy. I'm looking for a Keytar at the moment. If you watch ebay you'll see old Roland AX-1s going for like $300+ USD. You can buy a NEW roland AX-7 for $395. Go figure.

Good points.
I just saved a search for Mackie and no SRM450's have shown up on Canada's ebay.ca.
Something that size would cost me more used than to buy in a local store.

Still I don't think it'll be the right speakers, although they are no doubt great they'll easily cost me at least $1000 per speaker cab in Canada.
Once again too rich for my budget. :?
