I got PT since version 5.x. It's very intuitive and potent, if you want to work with audio, but MIDI implementation sucks... Do you have the LE version or the full version? LE is limited to 32 tracks and uses a lot more CPU power to work (the HD version has their own DSPs for that).
Concerning tips: it's easier to answer questions, than to give advices without any background ... But: always think of the possibility to automate any parameter (volume, pan, EQ bands, effects).
Best regards

Pro Tools is a bit overwhelming at first; Digidesign sell an instructional DVD from their website which is very useful in getting you 'up and running' with the basics, and from there you couldn't really go wrong with a copy of 'Pro Tools 7' - a visual quickstart guide by Steven Roback. My copy is branded for v7.3(LD or HD), but there's probably a 7.4 version out now, too.
