View Full Version : I don't get an audio signal (PC/Cubase problem)

Hello friends,

I've been trying to record an audio track for about an hour, but it simply does not want to work.
I get a MIDI signal and I can record MIDI tracks.
I've connected my synth (XP-30) with a stereo cable into the line in of my sound card (Creative SB LIVE! 1024).
I can HEAR everything through my boxes (the audio AND the MIDI signal ;) ), but when I have a look at the mixer of Cubase (SX) and play something, nothing happens.

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?

Thank you very much in advance,
Jan.[/u]

Looks like a software problem, I don`t use cubase but check out the audio inputs and outputs in the software, they should match your soundcard. Also check the bit rate that your program is in, and the bit rate that ypur card supports.

Let me know if works

Make sure the recording source on your sound card is truned to line in and not mic in or anything else like that.

Your audio signal has to pass some stations, in cubase check the following:

audio > inputs: your input must be shown and activated

monitor mixer:at the top your input must be selected, and "in" must be activeted (at the top of the levelmeter)

Now you should see your signal in the monitor mixer - check it out and tell me

heh easy dude

See the little speaker in the bottom right that gives you the mixer when you double-click it?

Do that now.

Now, go into the Options menu/properties.
Then, where it says "adjust volume for" and select Recording.

Make sure that both Mic in and Line in are checked before you hit Okay.

This will bring up another mixer but this one is for recording. You HAVE to make sure that the input that's selected is the line you're plugged into *DON'T USE THE MIC!!!! It's really bad for recordings, especially in a lower end soundcard*

Anyway, make sure it's selected the line in and that's where your keyboard's plugged into.

NOW try recording something ;)

I think I should have mentioned that I have SX 2.0

I don't know where I can find all those windows you're talking about (but I also have the German version).

I've been trying to upload a screenshot, but my FTP program seems to have problems...

I'll post a screenshot as soon as possible.
I've connected my synth with mic in and this works... Not sure what I've got to do to turn on the line in, because I don't know what you mean with a monitor that opens the mixer with a double-click...

OK, the FTP program works again after deactivating the Microsoft firewall. (Don't need that one, got ZoneAlarm anyway ;) ).

Here's the screenshot. You see: The mixer after creating one empty audio track.

Firstly, as Enigma says, make sure that (not in Cubase, in the Windows Volume Control) the line input(s) on your soundcard are Record enabled (not just play enabled) as otherwise you won't record anything!

I had a similar problem when trying to fudge my way around Nuendo, it came down to me not having the ASIO settings configured correctly. Cubase's installation routine should have created some shortcuts in the Start Menu folder that relate to ASIO, make sure you have the relevant inputs and outputs enabled. Then finally you may need to go to the Device Setup thing at the bottom of one of the menus (I forget which, I've not got my music partition booted up and don't have Nuendo or Cubase installed at the moment anyway!) and adjust the settings there. Without being in front of your specific machine, and not knowing all the German for the menu options, it's hard to be explicit, but I hope that's helped a bit :)

Oh, now I know what Dave meant with this "little speaker" :)
I don't use the microsoft setup, because I have the Creative Surround Mixer. Everything is set up correctly there. As I wrote in my first post, I can HEAR what I play through my boxes, only Cubase gets no signal.

I wanted to open the ASIO multimedia setup, but two error messages appear:

1. ASIOMME.dll is already running
2. ASUIMME.dll could not be laded

Sounds a bit controversal to me :D

Before you look at the ASIO drivers, I would look to see if audio in is enabled in Cubase. In my ancient copy it's under Audio => Inputs. Secondly I would make sure you are arming the track (click on enable button, select mono/stereo and folder for storing audio) for audio recording before attempting to do so. If those don't offer the solution, I would look at the drivers.

Best,

Jerry

Just cos you can hear it, doesn't mean that it can be recorded. The Soundblaster cards will only record from one input source at once, so that needs to be specifically selected using the control panel, be it via the Creative software (if you can do it in that) or by the standard Windows volume control (which I *know* you can do it in). I have never used the Creative mixer, even when I had a SBLive, because it was just horribly clunky and counter productive IMO.

As for your ASIO drivers, that sounds pretty much like my experience with Cubase, and Steinberg products generally! And Jerry's right, you do need to make sure that the audio track is set to receive audio, from where, and then arm the track before it'll record anything. Which I'm sure you know and were doing, but it's worth pointing out nontheless :)

OK, the problem wasn't so big - what you, Enigma and Spacehog, said first, was correct!

I only did not really understand what Dave wanted me to do, because I have everything in German language here.

I did not realize that clicking on properties -> record mode -> clicking OK opens a whole different window. The content is the same, but the title is not "playback controlling" but "record controlling", or whatever the name is in English.
What I still don't understand:
Because of my crappy sound card, there is a pretty loud noise as long as I have line-in enabled and set line-in as the thing that is being recorded. I had the idea to disable line-in as long as I do not want to record something - that is logical, isn't it? ;)
So, I disabled it, but I did still hear everything and there was also signal. I disabled WAVE/MP3 and everything was gone. That's actually very cool, because the noise is gone, but I don't understand how this can be when line-in is disabled... :)

Thank you all for your patience and help!!!!!!!!!
Jan.
