View Full Version : Sustained Notes while changing Sounds

Here's the case:
I have a simple wind effect as one sound, and I want it to sustain while I press my sustain pedal and switch to string sound...I want to use it in the beginning of No Doubt's It's My Life...Kurzweils have this capability, but my Roland JV-1080 doesn't seem to know what I want :)
Any comments very welcome!
Thanks

Use performance (Layer) Mode. Set the wind effect for part 1, and the strings to part 2. Set the Strings not to respond to sustain pedal. Start the song with part 1 on. When you want the sustained wind bed under the strings:
Hold down the pedal ( to keep the wind sounding) , toggle Part 1 off an Part 2 on. ( you just hit the two buttons at the same time on the XP synths. Sure there is something similar on the JV's.)
Now the sustain pedal will keep the wind sounding. The strings will play, and the fact that you have sustain turned off prevents your strings from turning to a sea of mud. You'll have to play the strings in legato (organ) touch.
I don't know if I have understood your situation correctly, but that should work.

Yes, the Performance Mode is the only chance you have. I know your problem very good, but I got used to the Performance Mode after a while.
Last week, I played State of Grace live with a friend and I this is how I programmed my performance:
part1: Piano (this patch was always switched on)
part2: strings (they appear in a couple of parts)
part3: choir (I used a choir patch from my vocal collection expansion for the "refrain")
part4: pizzicato strings for the middle part...
The sound would be crappy if I programmed that in patch mode, because the sounds would not be sustained and the piano sound would always change.
Note that the effects are not 100% as good as in patch mode, but Strings still sound very good in performance mode, and wind isn't a problem anyway.
I'm also not sure if the 1080 works the same way as my XP, but maybe this helps, too:
If you initialize a performace, all 16 parts have a voice reserve of 4, which means that you have a polyphony of 4 for every part. If you only need two instruments, set the voice reserve on "0" from part 3-16 and you have got 64 voices left for wind and strings. ;)
The best way to do that:
Go to: Performace Mode -> Edit -> Part -> Part Reserve -> Palette Edit
Now you see the voice reserves of part 1-8 or 9-16. :)

Instead of changing sounds, consider to change channels instead. If you change channels while sustain the sound on the former channel, that sound will be stuck and continue to play. During that time, you can play your strings sound on the other channel. If you want the wind sound to stop, push the panic button.
Ok, this may not be the cleanest method, but it works, normally on any multitimbral synth.
