View Full Version : Good solo effects
I have recently bought a Korg X2 but never had any experience with a sinth before so I am having problems finding good a timbre. The problem is that it doesn't any good pre programed for key solos. The kind of timbre that I am looking for is one that is similar to the one DT (anyone of the 3 keyplayers) usualy uses in its key solos. The best I can do usualy sounds like a horn... So if theres anyone that could help me I would appreciate it very much. THANKS

Distorted saw wave or square wave (or combination of the 2) usually works well.
I know a lot of people here can offer better advice than me on this
(especially since I know nothing about your keyboard), but that's probably a good place to start.

Well I have a Korg N364 (which is very close to the X2) and I use oscillator called Pulse 25% with overdrive and a bit of reverb.

We are starting a thread on lead tips in the Gear tutorials forum. You might pickup some additional ideas there. Generally, I would advise you to find a sound you are comfortable with, as opposed to nailing somebody else's sound. Why? First it may not be possible on your gear, and secondly it may not help you develop your distinctive style. That said, imitation is a good place to start.
If a patch sounds like a horn, it likely has a slower attack than the DT guys use. Try making the attack faster. Apart from that I would do what liquid shadow and sibelius said. Send the sound through a distortion/overdrive or amp simulation effect on your synth. Adjust the filter cutoff and EFX setting to taste. That'll get you 70% there. What's left is working an interesting attack into the lead, and programming expressiveness (wah, grunt, etc.) that you can pull into the sound when you need it. Also, play around the with the portamento and legato/multi triggering options to find some settings you like. I used to have an NS5R which I believe is similar to an X2. You are going to have to use the effects to get a nice lead.
Hope this helps,
Jerry
