I'm going to be getting a second board within a month or two (Triton Extreme) and would like to trigger sounds on my Yamaha PSR730 from the Korg. I've never done this, so correct me here if I have the configuration mixed up.
I'll run a MIDI cable from Korg's OUT to the Yamaha's IN and turn off local on the Korg for channel 1. Correct? That way I won't hear the notes on both the Korg and the Yamaha, rather just off the Yamaha.
Secondly, will I only be limited to MIDI patches, or can I somehow trigger the good voices off the Yamaha? I remember reading somewhere that Jordan uses his Kurzweil to play all the patches he needs on his Karma. I was hoping I could somehow do the same, only with a Korg and a Yamaha.
I know MIDI is pretty basic stuff, but like I said I never did this before and would like to have it worked out in my head before I spend hours in frustration trying to figure out why it's not working. Thanks guys.

If you plug KORG MIDI OUT into YAMAHA MIDI IN you get to play the Yamaha from the Korg keyboard. Of course if you turn off the local in Global, you just play Yamaha sounds (I'm sorry :P Korg Triton Extreme is way better from every point of view). I'd better play Korg sounds from the Yamaha sh... *keyboard* so I can ruin old garbage and keep my Extreme as new.
When you change program on the Korg you will notice you also change program on the Yamaha - that's because you send Midi Program Change *** through midi out. That's how Jordan changes patches - well, as you get deeper into Triton you will understand this is NOT the way he does (in my gear I just change patches by pressing the footswitch -> up one combi -> in combi there's EXT mode so I choose patch number on other boards from there).
Ok this might be confusing but...whatever.

Acctually that made a lot of sense Deceit. I'm planning on getting the Triton Extreme in two months when my computer is paid off, but in the meantime I've been watching the old Korg video on the Triton, so I'm aware of a lot of their features, including using a footswitch and the EXT mode. I just wasn't aware you can put in a patch number there.
So just say I wanted to have my Korg play patch 153 off my old Yamaha PSR730, which I know to be a patch called TechnoBrass. I would set EXT mode to 153 if I was using a footswitch? Or if I was doing it manually, I'd simply change my Triton to sound 153 and have local turned off?
I agree - the Korg is WAY better. I'm slowly getting better gear, but this stuff is great stuff to know - thanks again man!

You may want to consider a midi patchbay.
Even though you only have 2 boards, this will give you the flexibility to Have board 1 control board 2 or vice versa, or neither, depending on how you configure the programs. This also provides the added benefit of patch management. There are many of these out there. Right now, Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) is probably the most common brand. You can also find used MX-8's on ebay which are much simpler to program. They average around 80-100 dollars at auction.
Hope this is useful !
Happy patching !

If you plan to use a PC, there are some virtual midi patchbays in certain software.
Don't waste your money in patchbays if you have only two boards IMHO.
