How did he managed to change the color of his Triton? It's not white, it's red...And it's COOOOOLLLLLLLLL!!! OMG! :D

No need for power, some money though (at least 250 EUR) for colors and work.

It's actually red tape, that's all. Anyone can do it. I'd actually recommend taking the case apart, or masking the hell out of anything you don't want paint on, and using a spray primer and an airbrush to customize it anyway you want to.

That is pretty cool, eventhough I find Sherinian's a bit obnoxious. I guess I'm a simplistic kind of guy, and I can't imagine playing keyboards at that angle, that's not good for your wrists. Great player, and it works for him....

Sorry, I meant I find his setup a bit obnoxious. Though I do understand the flying-V concept and it works for him

Liquid Shadow

That angle is no harder on your wrists than playing "normally." If you set it up correctly then your wrists are at a perfect angle for playing, and your arms don't have to bend nearly as far to reach the keys. It's closer to standing still and just letting your arms hang than having a "normal" setup like Rudess and others have, so I would think that it would actually be better since it's a more natural position.

That, and it just looks \m/

That's cool, I've never tried it before, so I'll take your word for it.
I'd rather have it set normally as if the board would be when I'm sitting down just raised higher since I'm standing. If it works for you and your wrists don't hurt...awesome.

I tilt my keyboard and I guarantee that it's fantastic to play it like that. Much better than flat IMHO

Me too :D I love tilting my babes...anyway I don't find it comfortable AT ALL if I had to play B3 patches 'cos it's a bit unusual to slide over the keys with your palm at that angle...maybe I'll get some feeling one day...but now I just use my Alesis QS 6.1 as a tilted master keyboard for the Triton Le, and the Triton right back so I can play some patches right there if I ever need it.

When he plays with Planet X, he usually has a B3 or a Korg BX3 around, and it's not angled in any way, so perhaps he feels the same way? I didn't get to see him with Billy Idol, so I have no idea what sounds he used.. but he might not have needed any B3 patches for the gig.. If he did, he probably would've included a CX3 in the rig instead of relying on the Triton or the Electro for B3 tones. Maybe. Who knows? :)

Do you have AIM or MSN? I've been thinking about an Alesis 7.1 and I'd like to talk to you about what they can do if you have an instant messaging program (and maybe we can get off on a better foot than on progsounds  )

Well...I don't really use instant messaging, but I'm very often on IRC - I hope you know how to use it (download XChat, it's damn easy :D).
Server: irc.azzurra.org

If you don't like it, just ask me a bunch of questions by PM and I'll answer ASAP.

In reference to the setup angle (keys facing out) just wonder if he's ever encountered an unruly crowd...one flying beer bottle could make for a bit of a repair bill

That's true of pretty much any position you could put your keyboards in, doncha think?

Can anyone describe exactly how they go about tilting their keyboard downwards? What kind of stand do you use for it, what do you have to do special to get it at that angle, etc...?

Liquid Shadow

I got my stand from samash.com (worst experience ever...way more hassle than a stand should ever cause). It's just your basic X, but the top tilts...so where the top of the X meets the part where the keyboard rests on, there's an adjustable part like in the center of the X. So if I'm sitting down and playing (like now when I have my keyboard next to me in here) I can still have it normal, but I can also stand up and tilt it (or leave it normal too).

The worst part was setting up between the two or setting up after I had collapsed the stand...took forever to get it right each time until I got smart and put little strips of electrical tape as markers for easy setup.

There's also other ways to tilt it, like with the A-stands that Sherinian has, but I think those have to be modded a bit. You can also get a double tier stand and set it low, turn it around, and tilt as desired. I tried that at first but the model that I had wouldn't set low enough (it's gotta go pretty low for this to work) because of the stupid latch they had put on it. Instead of the normal teeth on each side, it was a metal plate with a few holes in it and a bar to go through and hold it in any one position, which limited how high/low I could set it by a lot, so that stand got returned pretty quick.

Not really. I would never set up with my keys facing at an angle out toward the audience...which tilting the boards down seems to do from what I can see in these pictures...that seems like a dangerous proposition. With the keys out to the side, you're right in the line of fire. I've seen plenty of flying objects. The bigger the venue, the higher the risk. People do some pretty stupid things in festivals and outdoor gigs, especially when they have access to beer bottles !

Hmmm, I don't quite agree. If a beer bottle if flying at your instrument and hits it, you're pretty much screwed regardless I would think. If anything, at least tilting your keyboard would prevent people from thinking they could rest their drinks on it, which is just an accident waiting to happen.

Whoa!!! Never played a show where people were throwing bottles     . I would be more worried about my head, eyes or hands then my keys in this situation....

The worst I ever seen is people staggering into gear or resting drinks on it.

Aww! You've yet to experience the unpredictable side of playing gigs then. There's nothing like having a drunk redneck chick holding a gun to your guitarist's head and demanding that you play a song for her birthday..

Or during a particularly heavy song, having a guy slam a beer bottle into the bar, breaking it into shards, and then cutting his own head up and having his friends blame it on your music. "He never does that stuff outside of other things.. he got caught up in all of that aggression."

And just two weeks ago, we played a show where we were the opening act, and right after we finished our set, as we were tearing down our gear, we got to see the second band's singer and the third band's singer at each other's throats, fist fighting over something petty.

I could go on and on, but everyone's got their gigging horror stories, I'm sure. But the more you play, the more chance you have for ending up in a similar situation. Enjoy!

WOW ! You and I are definitely on the same page, and yes there are at least a million horror stories !! It surely adds to the Adrenaline of the night ! I've been through some of that same stuff.
It definitely hits close to home. It almost seems proportional to travel time...The further you get away from your hometown, the scarier the stories get !

! One of my favorites is the time my band was tossed out of a hotel in Indianapolis IN, because we had Long Hair !!! (Manager also sicked the police on us called us subhumans !!...For Nothing at all other than the way we looked !!!Shoulda seen the crowd !!!) :D

If you are setting up close enough to your audience that they can rest their drinks on your equipment...time to stop setting up so close to the front :) BTW I never let anyone get close to my gear. If they want to see my setup they can check out my website. That's it. I've seen drunks spit beer into sound and light boards. When they start getting out of control, get the bouncer and get em out of your gig ! Or if no bouncer available, That's when the spare Apex bar comes out and gets used like a nightstick across the head ! And yes, I keep one in my gig bag at my feet.

Indianapolis isn't a city that's very progressive, I know all too well.

The band I was in played a couple shows after I quit, and the singer likes to do a little witty rap in between songs.. and he introduced an old song named "Go", which is a song about procrastination, by saying, "This is a song about procrastination, but we haven't finished it yet", and the bartender flipped out and threw them out of the bar saying, "We don't want any bands up there that aren't even done writing their own songs." Too bad it was written and recorded a couple years prior.. meatheads.

But that's okay. We just played that little piece of shit hole in the wall two weeks ago, and there were five people in the place, including the staff, and we still got 100% of our guaranteed pay for the evening. Fuck 'em :)

LMAO ! That is too true !! Cincinatti on the other hand, now there's a city that knows how to ROCK 7 days a week !!!
